Ohmega Watts “Emeralds”
A SOHH favorite drops a surprise single! Ohmega Watts is back with Emeralds, a single that showcases his trademark approach to sampling soulful records. This looks to be the first in a series of several new singles.

TwoDaystoAlaska “Beginnings”
Revisiting this one today. TwoDaystoAlaska sent a newer mix but it’s listed as a “private” stream. Either way, this is one of our favorite instrumental tracks from the Cult Classic Records label. Here is the older original mix:

Violentlyill “Divine”
Another dope submission from Violentlyill. Really into how this one develops. Had my head nodding for the duration.

Album Stream: Sareem Poems & Ess Be

Mind Over Matter is the latest drop from Lansing, MI based duo Sareem Poems & Ess Be. It released June 15th via Illect Recordings.

Audio: Mind Over Matter

After three years of writing, developing, and preparing new music, Sareem Poems and Ess Be are back with Mind Over Matter. Released via Illect Recordings, Mind is the second full length project from the Lansing, Michigan-based MC and producer duo. Their first album on Illect, 2015’s Beautiful Noise, was a highly motivational record based around positivity and perseverance. Mind Over Matter is definitely in the same vein as Noise, but it’s clear that as they worked on the new project, Poems and Ess Be weren’t afraid to dive deeper into who they’ve become as artists.

From start to finish, Mind Over Matter takes on some of the most pressing issues of our time. Employing his signature measured flow, Poems discusses political divisiveness, the dangers of succumbing to greed, loving yourself, and economic inequality in the United States. “So you in your heart of hearts really believe that the playing field is level?” he asks on the ninth track, “What’s Wrong.” Over the course of his twenty-year career, Sareem Poems has meticulously crafted a style of music informed by his deep respect, and love, for humanity. On Mind, Poems continues to build on that.

Over the last three years Ess Be has officially made the transition from being a part-time producer with a day job to pursuing music full time. Throughout Mind, Ess Be’s skill as a producer is on full display. Ess Be could easily fall back on familiar boom bap tropes or trendy drum patterns. Instead, he incorporates a little bit of everything. Heavy bass lines and trance-like EDM moments on tracks such as “Dance For The Dead” and “Eyedentity” keep the record moving as Sareem Poems adapts to each new musical moment.

As artists, Sareem Poems and Ess Be have never shied away from using their platform to bring people together—even as those in power would pull them apart. Mind Over Matter, their second full-length album on Illect Recordings, celebrates the beauty of humanity while also questioning the systems of inequity that have kept certain people in power for centuries. It’s always been important to practice self-care in the face of struggle and Mind Over Matter is a manifestation of that.

Ohmega Watts “Emeralds”
A SOHH favorite drops a surprise single! Ohmega Watts is back with Emeralds, a single that showcases his trademark approach to sampling soulful records. This looks to be the first in a series of several new singles.

Liam.M “I Don’t Need It”
We’ve featured Liam.M several times in the past (6 and counting I believe)… he always delivers. This is another head nodder.

Tonga “First Things First”
Mellow. Lofi. Soulful. This is a relaxing new instrumental track from Tonga.

Tonga is a multi-instrumentalist/producer out of San Diego. Born into a musical family, he was influenced by an early and constant exposure to various styles of music: Motown, reggae, jazz, and his father’s own Polynesian fusion music.

Bluestaeb “Alright”
Bossa Nove rhythms and trap drums… this works well here. It reminds me a little bit of Sango. This is a newly release single via Jakarta Records from his upcoming release Everything Is Always a Process.

Soul Choppa “Sunset”
Dusty soulful golden era boom bap. This is a stylistic nod to Pete Rock and other golden era production. Really nice vibes on this.

Deca “Petrified Forest”
Unapologetically boom bap. This is a new single from Flux by NYC-based artist/producer, Deca. It’s indicative of what you can expect to hear on the rest of the Flux album.

Tall Black Guy “Make It For Forever And Ever”
TBG has some of the best chops. So much soul, so on point. Had this on repeat all morning.

Air Kalo “Midtown”
Heads nods here… it has that grit and soul. Channels Kaytranada, Dilla, and even some Dust at points. We’ll be looking for more from this producer.

OtterNotBe “Who Am I”
Future boom bap from American producer OtterNotBe. Some nice jazzy overtones on this one too.

Raphy “Why I Hate Myself”
This one has some funk to it. Nice dusty sampling here from Raphy. Not sure why it’s given this title because it feels decidedly upbeat. Stay until the end. Maybe that’s our clue?

Beat Rabbi releases final project Mazel Tov Cocktail

The bad news… Beat Rabbi has retired from beat making. The good news… Mazel Tov Cocktail is here via Illect Recordings! It’s an appropriate send off to one of our favorite producers. 31 tracks including a Deepspace5 posse cut.

Beat Rabbi shares, “I assume other producers have been in a similar situation where they have a number of beats they really like that have been repeatedly passed over by rappers for years and they think, I really would like to get these joints out there and heard so people know all the kinds of sounds and styles I’ve experimented with, even if a rapper doesn’t want to rhyme on it. That’s how this project started, though it expanded beyond just that. But being that I hung up the beat making trade years ago, I needed the right person to edit, mix and master these beats – and spice them up to make them presentable. DJ Sean P is that dude for me – I have so much respect for his ear, style and talent and was blessed that enthusiastically signed up for the task. So hear it is – some Beat Rabbi as you have and haven’t heard him before, topped off with some Sean P funk.

J. Rhodan releases “Their, There”

J. Rhodan is back with another new drop, Their, There. 5 tracks, his signature sound.

Had shares his inspiration for the project, “Music can be a comfort. It can also be a timestamp. Certain songs have the ability to take us back to past memories, while consoling us at the same time.

“Their, There” is both. From me, for me (and you). Each song and sample used in the making of this project, served as comfort for me.

It’s also an ode to the artists whom I’ve sampled. These were moments in their artistry that were pivotal in their journey.

Art is an avenue that gives us the ability to grasp emotion from a moment, hone it’s inspiration and allow it to live beyond it’s inception.

I pray that you can vibe with me. Thanks for listening!”

PREMIERE: Teck-Zilla “Soul Buttah” beat tape

We’re proud to present a streaming premiere for Teck-Zilla’s Soul Buttah beat tape.

Nigerian-based producer Teck-Zilla delivers a new beat tape that can be best described by the words used in its title. Soul Buttah is exactly that—a project boasting soulful, buttery smooth instrumentals that blend classic Boom bap with modern, trap-leaning sounds for something wholly unique.

Soul Buttah is more than the latest beat tape from Teck-Zilla, though. It also represents his career coming full circle, as it’s the direct sequel to his debut, Souled Off: A Dedication to Molly Molls. It’s also the second of three tapes he plans on dropping this year (peep JetSoul Musique from earlier this year if you’ve been sleeping).

Musically, Soul Buttah carries Teck’s tradition of marrying different sounds to make one that’s all his own. And while we could praise each individual joint on here, it’s those with beat-switches like “Soul Buttah Medley” and “Northwood Soul” that are sure to pull you in during a cursory spin. That’s all part of Teck’s plan, of course. He created “Northwood Soul” as he was “looking for that laid-back feel but with tiny switch-ups and all that.”

The “all that” he’s referring to are what make the track so immediately engaging, because it feels like you’re listening to the producer creating it on the spot. It’s an experimental, jolting listen, and it’s just one of the reasons heads are sure to love diggin’ into each portion of Soul Buttah.

Soul Buttah is now available through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms via Str8Buttah Productions!

Soul Buttah Tracklist
1. Soul Intro
2. Beat Cheese
3. Soul Buttah Medley
4. Butterfly Dreams
5. To Damita Jo, with Love
6. Northwood Soul
7. Soul Retro
8. Sugars and Butters

Spacey groove on this one. Nice soulful sounds. One of our favorites from 2018.

Xavier[EXS22] “She Makes Me Feel Like…”
The artist’s description sums it up perfectly…

If you are looking for a song that features a happy and calming atmospheric hip-hop/jazz-hop style tune that has a euphoric and calming feel to it, my original instrumental production ‘She Makes Me Feel Like…’ would fit well with what you are looking for.
