The funk inspired single features production from Young Heat. “Complaining” features a dance-floor moving groove with a tight, driving style that aims to bless listeners worldwide.

Gardin says, “It’s so easy to complain about what is wrong and all we think is going against us, but if we sit back and recognize the power we have, we can take the steps to change our lives.”

Sareem Poems and Ess Be announce Mind Over Matter album

Mind Over Matter is set for a June 15th, 2018 release date via Illect Recordings.

After three years of writing, developing, and preparing new music, Sareem Poems and Ess Be are back with Mind Over Matter. Released via Illect Recordings, Mind is the second full length project from the Lansing, Michigan-based MC and producer duo. Their first album on Illect, 2015’s Beautiful Noise, was a highly motivational record based around positivity and perseverance. Mind Over Matter is definitely in the same vein as Noise, but it’s clear that as they worked on the new project, Poems and Ess Be weren’t afraid to dive deeper into who they’ve become as artists.

From start to finish, Mind Over Matter takes on some of the most pressing issues of our time. Employing his signature measured flow, Poems discusses political divisiveness, the dangers of succumbing to greed, loving yourself, and economic inequality in the United States. “So you in your heart of hearts really believe that the playing field is level?” he asks on the ninth track, “What’s Wrong.” Over the course of his twenty-year career, Sareem Poems has meticulously crafted a style of music informed by his deep respect, and love, for humanity. On Mind, Poems continues to build on that.

Over the last three years Ess Be has officially made the transition from being a part-time producer with a day job to pursuing music full time. Throughout Mind, Ess Be’s skill as a producer is on full display. Ess Be could easily fall back on familiar boom bap tropes or trendy drum patterns. Instead, he incorporates a little bit of everything. Heavy bass lines and trance-like EDM moments on tracks such as “Dance For The Dead” and “Eyedentity” keep the record moving as Sareem Poems adapts to each new musical moment.

As artists, Sareem Poems and Ess Be have never shied away from using their platform to bring people together—even as those in power would pull them apart. Mind Over Matter, their second full-length album on Illect Recordings, celebrates the beauty of humanity while also questioning the systems of inequity that have kept certain people in power for centuries. It’s always been important to practice self-care in the face of struggle and Mind Over Matter is a manifestation of that.

Sareem Poems & Ess Be “Shallow (feat. Finale)”

Sareem Poems & Ess Be collaborate with Detroit emcee Finale on Shallow, the 3rd single from Mind Over Matter. Look for this album to drop in June via Illect Recordings.

“This is a song reflecting on the ups and downs of life. And how those ups and downs have pulled away at core values. Values that we as humanity were rooted in. Being faithful, hard working, loving & committed,” shares Sareem Poems.

He continues, “I personally feel little is valued outside of self. This flows through all forms of entertainment. Making everyone’s favorite form of escape or hobby very shallow. I’m thankful for those working to change that direction.”

Beat Rabbi releases final project Mazel Tov Cocktail

The bad news… Beat Rabbi has retired from beat making. The good news… Mazel Tov Cocktail is here via Illect Recordings! It’s an appropriate send off to one of our favorite producers. 31 tracks including a Deepspace5 posse cut.

Beat Rabbi shares, “I assume other producers have been in a similar situation where they have a number of beats they really like that have been repeatedly passed over by rappers for years and they think, I really would like to get these joints out there and heard so people know all the kinds of sounds and styles I’ve experimented with, even if a rapper doesn’t want to rhyme on it. That’s how this project started, though it expanded beyond just that. But being that I hung up the beat making trade years ago, I needed the right person to edit, mix and master these beats – and spice them up to make them presentable. DJ Sean P is that dude for me – I have so much respect for his ear, style and talent and was blessed that enthusiastically signed up for the task. So hear it is – some Beat Rabbi as you have and haven’t heard him before, topped off with some Sean P funk.

James Gardin’s “Focus” aims to uplift

James Gardin is without a doubt the most encouraging rapper. Don’t believe me? Follow him on social media (links below). His new single “Focus” is more of that, a relatable song about battling habits and vices… leading to renewed focus.

Here is what the press release has to say about “Focus”:

Illect Recordings artist James Gardin collaborates with label mate Ess Be on his new single “Focus”. They attempt to address how habits and vices are not only damaging to you, but also to your purpose and your focus. James says, “A lot of times we look at bad habits solely on they hurt us, but what if they also hurt the world at large. I hope you all will be inspired by this song to reassess what holds your attention and time, and get refocused on what’s important.

Sareem Poems & Ess Be “Way Up There (feat. Sean C. Johnson)”

Way Up There is a dope collab from Sareem Poems & Ess Be featuring Sean C. Johnson. We’re loving Ess Be’s production on this… sets the perfect tone for Sareem and Sean’s vocals.

Sareem Poems shared, “Way Up There is a song about not allowing anything to steal your joy. There are so many things that can bring you down. Focusing on the positive or the brighter side of things can be very difficult to do sometimes.

I’ve purposefully put myself in this head-space. It’s the best habit I’ve ever had. Many thanks to Sean C. Johnson. He came through and executed the hook perfectly.

Ozay Moore & Tall Black Guy “WSTCST” single

Ozay Moore’s In The Wake Of O album (Illect Recordings) is buzzing heavy right now. The latest single from the project is the Tall Black Guy produced “WSTCST”.

Ozay shares, “In carrying out the theme of past, present and future on “In the Wake Of O”, It was important to follow up the notion of contentment heard on “Where You At?” with (of course) a statement of reflection and longing. In my case, that’s to one day return home to the WSTCST (West Coast)… namely Seattle… my birthplace.

Tall Black Guy shot me the beat as it was going to be a track for a collab album we were talking about working on. Being that I was already in the process of building “In the Wake Of O”, I petitioned it make the album. I knew once it was written that we had a serious joint on our hands. Once Tony Ozier laced the hook and Teeko touched it with the Talk Box… it was a wrap! This is for the W!
