GRANDGOOD.COM: Standout Rap, 2017 [Mixed by DJ Sheep]

This collection of music focuses on the independent voice in hip-hop, where the tension of selling records to mass markets tends to be less pronounced. This doesn’t exclusively mean unsigned and you’ll note some music from career musicians. But even with long term artists the songs we selected felt less encumbered. Because of my heavy hand you’ll also have to deal with an east coast bias but yo that ain’t necessarily a bad thing all the time, is it?

Thanks to DMC champion DJ Sheep you can listen to the professionally mixed version featuring 40 or so of the 55 tracks listed below, recorded live in one take on 2 turntables and a mixer at the Bulletproof Crates lab in Brisbane, Australia on New Years Day 2018. You can also stream a warm @cv_ tape version and it might make you recall what it was like dubbing tapes for your close friends in ’88. We also have playlists on soundcloud and youtube you can hit shuffle on (yea we know, but Spotify doesn’t have most of the music).

Goes without saying but special thanks to the artists, we appreciate what you do. The Hip-Hop community suffered great loss in 2017 and not enough can be said about the lost talent. At the same time, enthusiasm from young heads and old heads alike keeps it going. Lest we forget, many founding artists, like Coke La Rock pictured above, continue to walk among us. So again, big up to all the artists but also the rest of the community of listeners, show promoters, podcasters, writers….

Special shout to Dj Sheep for lending his hand, literally. Peace to Ming for capturing stunning images of the legends throughout the year. And of course @CV_ for his dedication and influence. Participation is critical. Thank goodness for contemporary rap.

Sean Price & Small Professor bring the ruckus on “Refrigerator P" • Word Is Bond

Coalmine records gifted us with a special Record Store Day 2017 offering in the form of the rare version of “Refrigerator P,”. Anchored by the late great Sean Price alongside his Heltah Skeltah partner Rock who both bring their characteristic vivid lyrical assault over the sombre Small Professor crafted soundscape.

From the moment the strings drop, you already know there’s no other emcee that could do this beat justice like P! Lyrically, the Brownsville native is as on point as ever, dropping crazy references of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX victory and his trademark no-bullsh*t punchlines. And then there’s the hook, which pairs his longtime partner-in-rhyme and other half of Heltah Skeltah, The Rockness Monsta, with the turntable madness of DJ Revolution.

Ruck and Rock prove once again why they’re regarded as such an incredible force, as Rock’s no nonsense hook complements P’s bully bars in a way that could very well make this track one of the toughest tracks in P’s catalog.

The record is now available as a 10-Inch maxi-single which comes loaded with the instrumental and a special bonus beat selection called “P’s Theme.” Rounding out the release is the smoothed out “Peaky Blinders” remix of “Refrigerator P” featuring the Emerald Isle-born emcee, Rob Kelly. Listeners will no doubt attest that he holds his weight alongside P.

To make this RSD title even more of a collector’s item is the illustrated artwork designed by FRKO, perhaps best known for being Action Bronson’s in-house artist. These won’t last long, so order your copy today! “Refrigerator P” is also available for stream and download through the digital outlet of your choice.

Frank B & Rock go ham for their hometown on "Brooklyn Vs. All " (Video) • Word Is Bond

Frank B. offers a grimier look at his stomping grounds in his new video for “Brooklyn Vs. All” featuring fellow BK native and living rap legend Rock (of Heltah Skeltah/Boot Camp Clik). The mellow, girmy soundscape helps the 2 emcees sling their verbal shots at the opposition with no restrictions.  There’s plenty of sharp wordplay and intricate rhymes, too. Like in Frank’s verse when he spits “Keep a cannoli stuffed with the broccoli/ And then I light it up until I can’t speak properly/ I speak prophecy/ I dare ya try to speaker-box with me.” while Rock paints it vividly with “..Run with a bunch of animals, lions, tigers and bears (Monster)/ Apes and wolves, vipers right in the rear

The video is directed by Mike D Visuals and centers on shots that capture the grit and rawness of the Brooklynite’s verses. Sure, there’s footage of the famed Brooklyn Bridge and surrounding areas, but it’s all seen through a stark and almost noir-ish lens, all set to the backdrop of GIT Beats’ ominous production, who’s previously worked with the other half of the Heltah, Sean Price (RIP), as well Cormega, Prince Po, and the late Prodigy, among others. Both sonically and visually, “Brooklyn Vs. All” is a fitting portrayal of the New York City borough, particularly as it’s described by these two emcees.

The track itself stems from Frank’s forthcoming album, Let Me B Frank, that’s set to also feature Nyck Caution (of Pro Era) and Sticky Fingaz (of Onyx), among others. And if his name looks familiar but you’re having trouble placing it, here’s a hint: he was a featured contender on Missy Elliott’s The Road to Stardom series on UPN. He even landed a deal with her imprint, Gold Mine Records. But now, Frank’s doing his thing with his own imprint, Nobel House, and ready to enter the New Year in a major way.

Check out the visuals, and head over to the digital retailer of your choice if you’d like to support. Let Me B Frank is set to drop in early 2018 through Frank’s Nobel House imprint via EMPIRE Distribution.
