Although I get where he’s coming from when he says – “And one thing that’s exciting about some new rap is that it’s like music without a past. It’s not reverential towards rap that went before” – I think I also would point out that his own music is mostly the opposite. His production would appear to be deeply informed by the past (not just by rap obviously) and this approach can be just as exciting, liberating and boundless. I’ve battled internally with the idea of uninformed art, not just music, for some time and I’ve drawn no conclusions, save for the fact that it matters, except for when it doesn’t.
